Obituary of Robert Edward Dunn

Robert Edward Dunn, 76, of Old Saybrook, beloved husband of Candice (David) Dunn, passed away peacefully on October 19, 2014. Bob was born in Paterson, NJ on February 18, 1938 to Ethamer George Dunn and Nina (Willis) Dunn. He graduated from Ramsey High School (Ramsey, NJ) in 1956, and then from Davis & Elkins College (Elkins, WV) in 1960, with a BS degree in Business Administration. He married Virginia Sue Dunn, of Mahwah, NJ, in 1957. They raised three children in Old Saybrook, until her death in 1982. He started his career in 1960 with the publishing company Prentice Hall in Englewood Cliffs, NJ. He started as a Method's Analyst, and moved to Old Saybrook when he became a supervisor in their Methods and Systems Department, in Waterford. As the role of computers in business expanded, he was subsequently promoted to Assistant and then Data Processing Manager. He retired in 1997 as Vice President of Computer Operations. Bob served as a volunteer fireman, with the Old Saybrook Fire Department, from 1965 to 1972. He was a coach in Old Saybrook Little League Baseball for 14 years. Bob and Candy were married for 30 wonderful years, devoted to each other, their children and grandchildren. They enjoyed many trips to Bermuda, and spent winters together in Bonita Springs, FL. He was an avid tennis player and golfer, and played often until the end of his life. Bob loved spending time with friends and family. "Bob gave the best hugs in the world" was a common refrain. In addition to his wife Candy, Bob is survived by his children and their spouses: Paul and Tracy Dunn of Bainbridge Island, WA; Jeffrey and Patricia Dunn, of Ivoryton; Steven Dunn, of Niantic; Shannon and Claire Dunn, of Guilford, as well as his 10 grandchildren: Griffin, Clara, and Corey Dunn; Amanda, Eric, and Kevin Dunn; Ian and Samantha Dunn; Oliver and Liam Dunn. In addition, Bob is survived by his mother-in-law Muriel David of Old Saybrook, and brother-in-law Daniel David of Chester. A memorial service will be held at the First Church of Christ (Congregational), 366 Main Street, Old Saybrook, on Saturday, November 1st at 11:00am.
