Obituary of Captain Alan F. Miller

Captain Alan F. Miller, USCG, Retired, age 81 of Essex passed away peacefully at his residence on Sunday, May 12, 2019 with his beloved wife Clara at his side. He was born in Appleton, Wisconsin on March 25, 1938 the son of John C. and Ethel E. (Andrews) Miller. Raised in Appleton he was a graduate of Appleton High School. Following graduation he was awarded his appointment to the United States Coast Guard Academy and graduated as a member of the Class of 1960. Captain Miller served in the United States Coast Guard until his retirement in 1986. After his retirement from the Coast Guard Alan became the Assistant Vice President of Oakland University located in Rochester, Michigan where he oversaw campus facilities and operations. He retired from Oakland University in 2002. Alan was a resident of Essex since 2001 and served his community as Director of the Essex Parks and Recreation Department. He volunteered for F.I.S.H. (Friends in Service Here) and was a member of American Legion Post #18 in Essex. Besides his wife Clara Gonzalez Casals Miller, he leaves his daughter, Montserrat Miller of Atlanta, Georgia, his granddaughters, Gabriella Miller Perez and Valentina Miller Perez of Austin, Texas, his sister, Marla Keesee of Los Angeles, California, and brother, Stanley Miller of San Francisco, California. Alan was predeceased by his son, Timothy Jose Miller, brother, Philip Miller, and sister, Joann Danch. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 17, 2019 at 10:30 AM at Saint John’s Episcopal Church, located on the corner of Main and Cross Streets in Essex. The rendering of Full Military Honors will follow the service at the Church. Inurnment will be privately held by the family in the United States Coast Academy Columbarium located in Robert Crown Park on the grounds of the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Alan’s name to Middlesex Habitat for Humanity new veteran homeowners, the Fitzpatrick Family.  Checks may be sent, payable to St. John’s Episcopal Church, to St. John’s Episcopal Church, P.O.
