Obituary of Robert "Bob" Nuhn

Beloved father and grandfather Robert Nuhn passed away on Monday, July 1st, 2019 at Chesterfields Healthcare Center in Chester, CT, just one day before his and Irma’s 70th wedding anniversary. Irma predeceased Bob by 6 months in January 2019. Bob was born at home in Ivoryton, CT on October 29th, 1923. The son of George Nuhn and Marion Kelsey, he attended Ivoryton Grammar School and graduated from Pratt High school in 1943. Two weeks after graduation, Bob was drafted into the U.S. Army in the midst of WW2. Bob served with the 705th Military Police Detachment, first in the European-African-Middle Eastern theater campaign and later in the Asiatic-Pacific theater campaign. Bob was honorably discharged in 1946 at the rank of SGT. After the war, Bob went on to receive a degree in accounting from Stone Business College in New Haven, CT. Bob’s friend, Walter Lynn, introduced him to his sister Irma. After a long courtship, Bob and Irma married at the Lynn family home in Essex on July 2nd, 1949. They settled in Ivoryton and raised their three children. Bob was a hard worker and at times worked 3 jobs to provide for his growing family. In 1963 he began work as a bookkeeper for the E.E. Dickinson Company in Essex. He was soon promoted to office manager, and eventually became President of the company from 1979-83. Upon retiring in 1983, Bob and Irma sold their home in Ivoryton and moved to Chester. They would host many family gatherings at their home in Chester. Bob was a lifelong member of the First Baptist church in Essex, serving as treasurer on many committees and teaching Sunday School. He was VFW Post 11509 Quarter Master and a Life Member. Bob’s children and grandchildren never tired of listening to his stories of Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Will Geer, Nelson Eddy and the “Grand Tetons.” Bob loved his family and they loved him dearly. Bob was predeceased by his wife Irma, his grandson Daniel Nuhn, his brother Charles Nuhn, and Irma’s brother Walter Lynn and his wife Midge, along with their son David Lynn. Bob is survived by his 3 children: Donald Nuhn and his wife Linda, Ellen Ziobron and her husband William, and Timothy Nuhn and his wife Janice. He is also survived by his grandsons Steven Nuhn and his wife Caitlin, and Caleb Nuhn. He is survived by Timothy’s stepson Jonathan Leonard and his wife Jessica, along with their children Alessandra and Aidan. The Nuhn family would like to thank the members of the First Baptist Church in Essex, VFW Post 11509, the staff of Chesterfields Healthcare, the Visiting Nurses of the Lower Valley, the Old Saybrook Estuary, Robinson Wright & Weymar Funeral Home, and the very caring neighbors on Deep Hollow Road.
