Mary Ellen, I am so sorry for your loss. I am proud to have been able to call John friend, fishing, and hunting buddy. The only man I know that pointed his finger at a deer and tried to shoot it with it. Then in his unique humor, stated he missed because the sights were bent. Goodbye my friend. God bless.

Mary Ellen, another story; the late 60s John and I reconditioned a 1951 Harley we found tucked away at Troop K.
We rode the bike on Center patrol for two summers. John wrote about the motorcycle in his book.

Mary Ellen and Family,
I am so sorry for you loss - I have fond memories of him on the 2nd floor where I spent many hours making copies and fighting with the copier. He would always come in to check on me and shake his head and smile. When I bought my 1st car both he and Mary Ellen came out to see it. Memories that I think about often these days. Rest In Peace Lt. Col. -

Dear Mary Ellen
On behalf of all your friends and neighbors at Riverbend, please know that we are thinking of you and your family as this time of grief and sorrow. John, the "Colonel" as he was affectionately known, was an integral part of the Riverbend community in Stuart, Fl, and will be sorely missed by all who knew him, We especially will miss John holding court at any one of our pool parties telling captivating stories with his wry Irish smile and gruff voice.
We were certainly fortunate to have had John in our lives, and extend our sincere condolences and love to you and your family.
Sincerely,
Gaspare Cappello
President, Riverbend Condo Assn. Board of Directors

I had the high honor and great privilege of knowing and working with John. A true friend both to myself and the CSP. I/we always looked forward to seeing him and speaking with him at the many State Police Affairs in Florida. ALWAYS an advocate of the Department and all of its members, civilian and sworn (of ALL ranks), he will always be remembered by all who knew him.
I only wish my "magic chicken" could have been waved and make his illness just go away!
Both Linda and I will dearly miss a good friend and great man. We wish only the best for Mary Ellen and the entire family. His absence will be missed for a long time, but his memory will last even longer. May God bless him and the entire family during these next difficult days. I know the Department will honor him with all that they have to give.
Due to a recent illness, we will be unable to attend the Services that honor John, but know we are thinking of you OFTEN!
Love and prayers,
Jim and Linda Vones
