I was so thrilled to be the Colonel's neighbor on Hutchinson Island.

Mary Ellen's NY Giants Super Bowl XLVI was epic, and he was all-in.

His mind was a library, and his memory was an HBO mini-series waiting to happen.

There may a big "Whew!" in CT tonight, because the Colonel knew where every skeleton was buried.

Still, he emanated kindness and cheerful generosity.

And so funny; he said (straight-faced) "You know, I'm a 100 ton captain....but I've lost a little weight".

What a guy.....a true gentleman, one who will be sorely missed.

I met John in November 1963 when we were both being inducted into the US Army. John and I were the best of friends thru basic training, Infantry communications training and after being released from active duty, we served together in the same National Guard Company until 1970. We maintained our friendship over the years, often double dating and enjoying other experiences too numerous to mention. I could go on forever about summer training at Ft Drum, our trips to Canada and boating misadventures on the Connecticut River. I lived in California but when working in New York I often traveled to Old Saybrook to renew our acquaintance and John even drove his car all the way to California once for a visit. John was more fun than anyone else I ever met and my life is greatly enriched from knowing him.

When I think of John I am reminded of a quote I always liked from Margaret Thatcher.

"Don't follow the crowd, let the crowd follow you"
