Nick and I landed in West Union in 1968. He as a student and I as a math teacher and coach. He was in my math class as a senior, played football and ran track. Good at both. Betty and I were good friends with his parents and did some socializing together. Always a good time. Lost track of him but after his schooling ended up as superintendent at Starmont Schools where I saw him often. We attended his lovely outdoor wedding at an acreage just South of West Union. Great time and fun. His daughter was into the running scene so would see him at some road races. He and his family were hardcore Hawkeye fans. He then moved on to other school districts.
With sympathy to family and friends,
Bob & Betty Scott

We are saddened by the passing of your father, grandfather and brother. He was an example to many including his schoolmates. I am so glad that you reached out to me, talking to Nick if only briefly one more time meant more than words can express. I can't single out one special moment or event Nick I shared; what meant the most was just his friendship and the positive influence he had on me. That is the memory of Nick that will always be with me. There is one thought that comes to mind when I think of Nick that is of him walking down the hallway in high school, it was always very purposeful and determined, sometimes with a pencil in his mouth.

I'll never forget Mr. Johns' time as Principal and Superintendent at Starmont High School. He carried our district through the difficult time of Dr. Green's suicide, then several months later, through the suicide of a classmate, Lance M. He also provided wisdom and compassion to me personally as I dealt with a difficult life situation. His positive attitude and belief in my abilities made a big difference in my life! Namaste

I am grateful to Nick for hiring me as an elementary principal in Ames in 1999. 17 years later, I still love working in Ames. He was also very kind and compassionate when my dad was diagnosed with cancer. After Nick's own battle, I knew he understood. I will always remember Nick fondly.

It was with deep sadness that I learned of Nick's passing. Although it has been a number of years since our paths have crossed, the memory of our connection has brought pleasant recollections to mind. We became friends during our senior year in high school in West Union, and then were roommates for our first year at the University of Iowa. During those now long past years, I was welcomed into the Johns home and shared more than a few adventures with Nick. He was very bright and it warms my heart to know that he shared his talents with others through his commitment to education. The true measure of a man is not what he does for himself, but what he does for others. I am honored to have been a small part of his life.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Johns. He was a wonderful man who always led by example and who always had the students' best interest in mind; students of LCSD were lucky to once have him as their leader. It was a pleasure to work for him and to learn from him - he will be missed. My thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.

Nick was the principal and athletic director at Starmont when I interviewed for my first teaching job. He made me feel extremely comfortable since it was my first interview. The thing I will remember about the interview, on a cold April day, he and I walked down so he could show me the all-purpose track, since I was also interviewing for the junior high track position. :) I had his son, Jeremy, in 4th grade. I also coached Stacy in junior high track. I have thought about him often. He was a good man. My thoughts are with your family.

I will miss Nick. He was a good man who stood for principle. He was my idea of what a school administrator should be, and set a very high bar. I feel my life is enriched because he had been in it.
