To the family,
Your Mom and I met at the very first hospice training for Middlesex Hospice back in 1984. We immediately bonded and were thrilled to be accepted as volunteers in this very new end of life care program. We met at meetings, shared rides, volunteered together on the unit and in Homecare.
In 1994 I became the hospice volunteer coordinator, my dream job. I now got to work with volunteers like your mother who were so committed to helping others during their final days. Elvira and I always shared something a little bit special because we were part of the first class of volunteers.. She holds a special place in my heart.
My husband, Skip, was her paperboy many years ago. We send our love and sympathies. Karen and Skip Hubbard

During my formative years, the Sopkiw residence was like a second home to me - and Mrs. Sopkiw was like a second mom. My own home and Mom were pretty good, but during those days, it was nice to have a backup plan!
Mrs. Sopkiw was, and is, a wonderful lady who will be greatly missed, and her spirit certainly lives on in her family and within those she touched.

She was an amazing woman, full of life and love. Alice and I have been friends since college. Although I didn't see Mrs. Sopkiw as often as I would have liked, she always greeted me as if I were her own daughter - hugs and kisses and questions about my girls and the family. I will miss her dearly. She was the fabric of this community and will be remembered fondly by all of us that knew her, as well as those that may not have known her personally, but benefited from all the wonderful charity work that she did.

I remember the first time I met Vera - she made quite an impression on me. She was sitting at the kitchen table with my mother, Evelyn Miezejeski, and I couldn't take my eyes off of her! She was remarkable! She squealed, she laughed, she exclaimed "God love her" every time my mother made a snarky comment, she was fun and she was funny. Vera positively radiated joy. Amazing woman. My heartfelt sympathy to Alice and Mark and all her children and loved ones.

I have loved Vera all my life and will miss her very much. She joined my mother and my sister Nancy and I who share a Birthday for our celebration dinner for all of my childhood and in recent years we continued the tradition. She came to my house many times for various celebrations over the years and I will miss her saying "whatnot and everything". I will especially miss her laugh. In 2009 we were both in Paris at the same time and met at her hotel for a cocktail. That was wonderful! I am so sorry I can't attend the funeral as I would love to see Vera's family and express my sorrow personally, but I am in Florida. I am so sorry for your loss.

My sincere condolences to the Sopkiw family for your loss. Your mother was a good friend to my mother (Jackie Rohrberg) and I got to see her every now and then in Old Lyme when she stopped in and I was there.
I remember living on Sunset Terrance and have many memories, but the one that stands out the most was my parents playing cards on a Saturday nights with your parents, they were always having fun & laughing together. Please know that Elvera is in my heart & prayers as is your family at this difficult time.
God Bless Carl Rohrberg

I am so saddened by Elvera's passing. We were neighbors and our families were very close.I worked for years as a lineman with Walt at CL&P for years and we shared many parties and picnics with the Sopkiw family and I will always cherish those memories. She was larger than life and I'm sure she has the Angels laughing with her great New York accent.

To Vera's family
I am so sorry to her your mom passed. She was such a wonderful friend to everyone. One of my favorite mememories of her was when she would walk in when we had our monthly lunch (The Lunch Bunch) meeting with a big smile that lit up the room followed by HELLO LADIES. Her voice was musical. She will be missed so much. You all were so blessed to have her as a mom and grandmother.
