Obituary of Joan North

Joan E. North, 89, a longtime resident of the Knollwood Beach Section of Old Saybrook passed away peacefully on June 24, 2016 at Apple Rehabilitation in Old Saybrook. Beloved wife of the late John J."Jack" North who predeceased her in 2011. Joan was born on Sept.1, 1926 in North Conway, NH, the daughter of Ronald & Frances (Stuart) Abbott. She received her Bachelor degree from Colby College and her Masters degree from Columbia University. Joan's career included working for ABC TV in New York City and was followed by 25 years in education, both in New York and New Jersey, before retiring to Old Saybrook in 1980. She was a member of the Old Saybrook Women's Club and held the office of President from 1986-1988. Joan also was a member of the Old Saybrook Historical Society and served as their secretary for a period of five years. She is survived by her step-son Michael North & step-daughter Patricia Thomas and her husband Stephen all of New York, step-grandchildren Suzanne North and Kelly Harris, her twin sister Jane Ellen Johnson and her niece Wendy Jo Johnson both of Houston, TX and sister-in-law Mary A. Olds of Greenville, SC. Graveside Services for Joan will be held on Tuesday, June 28th at 11am at Riverside Cemetery in Old Saybrook.
