Obituary of Ernest Lynde Jones

Ernest "Ernie" Lynde Jones, 89, a former 67 year resident of Killingworth, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 10th in Cape Coral, Florida. Ernie was born on July 7, 1924 in Ivoryton to Perley and Edith (Lynde) Jones. He graduated from Chester High School in 1942 and then served in WWII in the Navy Aircorp from 1942-1946 as an Aviation Machinist First Class. He worked in the Experimental Division of Pratt & Whitney in East Harford for 36 years. Ernest was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Herbert and Norman, and his wife of 61 years, Signe Jones (Anderson) in 2008. Ernie was very active in his community. He was a past Commander and member of the Killingworth VFW, a former Master of the Killingworth Grange, President of the Chester Alumni and President of the Killingworth Senior Club, where he initiated the pen pal program between elementary students and seniors. At the age of 72 Ernie took a TV Production Class at the Haddam-Killingworth High School, which led to 8 years of volunteer work videotaping school board meetings. Ernie was also an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Centerbrook and client at Pastimes Adult Day Center in Deep River. Ernie traveled extensively abroad with his wife, Signe, upon retiring. He enjoyed visiting his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ernie loved gardening, and could be found most days in recent years among his flowers and fruit plants with his beloved dog, Maisie, by his side. Ernie is survived by his three daughters, Jennifer Goodwin and her husband Bruce of Kingston, NH, Beverly Reid and her husband Hank of Cape Coral, FL, and Gloria Vogt and her husband Joseph of East Swanzey, NH, 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Centerbrook, followed by interment with the rendering of Full Military Honors in the Evergreen Cemetery in Killingworth. A reception will follow back at the church. At Ernie's request, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Trinity Lutheran Church, 109 Main St., Centerbrook, CT. 06409.
