Obituary of Elizabeth Ann Glendinning

Elizabeth Ann Glendinning, age 94, died Saturday, July 23 in Essex, Connecticut. A graduate of the Oak Grove School in Maine, Betty received her nursing certificate through the St. Barnabas Hospital School of Nursing, Livingston, New Jersey. While in training, she served as a cadet nurse at the US Army Hospital, Schenectady, NY caring for returning WWII wounded. She earned a B.S. in nursing, and her RN, at the University of Bridgeport and held two Masters degrees, one in Nursing Administration from Columbia University and one in Health Systems Management from Renssalear Polytechnic Institute. Betty held staff positions at Columbia Presbyterian and Doctors Hospital in New York City, and was Chairman of the Department of Nursing at Norwalk Hospital, Norwalk, Connecticut, where she was also a member of the Board of Trustees, being only the second nursing chairman in the country to serve in that capacity. She was very active in the nursing profession and was President of the Connecticut League for Nursing. Following retirement to Nantucket, Massachusetts, she remained active in civic affairs. She was President of the Nantucket Civic League, President of the Island Home Advisory Committee, and President of the Advisory Committee to the Nantucket Animal Hospital. Betty moved from Nantucket to the Essex Meadows community in 2006 and served as a member of the health committee, leading an initiative to formally integrate resident volunteer support in emergency planning, a first for retirement communities in Connecticut. Apart from her professional and civic interests, Betty Glendinning was, in particular, a life-long lover of dogs, golf, bridge, the New England Patriots, and the New York Yankees. Betty was a multi-time winner of the Sankaty Head Golf Club (Nantucket) women's trophy and very active on the Membership Committee there. She leaves loving cousins, nieces, nephews, seven grand-nieces and nephews, and close friends she counted as family. A memorial reception will be held at Essex Meadows, 30 Bokum Road, Essex, CT at 2pm on Monday August 8th.
