Obituary of Charles Allan Borchert
Charles Allan Borchert, a longtime Connecticut resident, died May 5, 2017, at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Born December 15, 1923, he was the son of the Late Reverend Walter F. Borchert and Madeline Andrews Borchert. Allan graduated from the Loomis School in Widsor and received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Cornell University. He was proud to have served in the Navy in World War II as a Lieutenant (junior grade) on the USS Fremont. A succeeful business career began for him in sales and culminated in Allan's role a president of American Powered Metals in North Haven. He and his family moved around the state from West Hartford, to Brookfield, to Madison and finally, in retirement, to Essex Meadows. Al loved to sail, and spent many summer days on Long Island Sound in "Yankee" his Catalina 22, later recounting interesting tales of his experiences on the water. He is predeceased by his wife of over 63 years, Pom, and by his daughter, Wendy Hirtle. He will be missed by his large , loving family, who fondly knew him as "Bop." He leaves a son, William P. Borchert and wife Margaret of Canton, CT, a daughter, Laura B. Smith and husband Larry of Mont Vernon, NH, and a son-in-law Michael Hirtle and wife Judy of East Providence, RI. He also leaves nine grandchildren: Dr. Samuel P. Robinson and wife Amanda of Virginia Beach, Leah Brown and husband Andrew of Philadelphia, Mandy Hart of Seal Beach, CA, Andrew Hirtle and wife Araceli of Downey, CA, Abigail Borchert of Bellingham, Washington, John Borchert Syracuse, NY, Grant Smith and wife Krystal of New London, NH, Kirk Allan Smith and wife Melissa of Simsbury, CT and Brett Smith and wife Amanda of Brookline, NH. He also leaves twelve great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Allan was predeceased by his sister Dorothy Borchert Sterling. Allan was a member of the Old Lyme Congregational Church where a memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at 2:00PM.
