Obituary of Edward E. Barry

Edward E. (Ted) Barry, age 55 of Essex, Connecticut went home to the Lord on Thursday, January 11, 2018 in the loving care and presence of his wife of 28 years, Laura (Laurie) Barry. Ted was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts but lived most of his early life in Hingham, Massachusetts. Ted attended the University of Colorado in Boulder, where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Russian History. He went on to receive an MBA in International Business from the University of South Carolina, where he also had the honor and privilege of meeting his life partner, Laurie. Ted was very entrepreneurial and through hard work and perseverance rose to the position of President of Matik North America, a company that sold high-end printing equipment to many of the premier printers in the Americas and Europe. His mother Marion C. Barry and his father James L. Barry preceded Ted in death. His wife Laurie Wright Barry, his son Hugh Harris Barry and his wife Julia of New Haven, his son Peter Chase Barry of Essex, his brother Timothy Barry and his wife Elizabeth of Raleigh, North Carolina, his in-laws Wade and Sally Wright of Dunwoody, Georgia, his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Chris and Christine Wright of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, along with a number of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, survive him. Ted was a devoted family man and put his family first in all things. His friends and family often speak about his integrity, good nature and his ability to be objective when emotions may have dominated a situation. Ted was a voracious reader and a student of the classics and all things intellectual. He especially loved poetry and music, British television shows, and his hometown Red Sox and his Patriots. He was an avid skier, swimmer and golfer, and it gave him such joy to be on the top of a mountain, or riding the waves at Cape Cod, or to be on a beautiful golf course. Most of all, Ted loved his wife Laurie and his sons, Hugh and Peter. He was proud of their individual accomplishments, interests and differences. He loved to watch the boys play in their sports games, and gave them his love of golf. He had more time than most fathers to be with his boys, and it helped them become the fine men they are today. Ted would constantly challenge all of us to educate ourselves about topics in life with which we were unfamiliar. Through his significant business and leisure travel abroad, Ted learned things about other cultures and shared those openly. He loved to travel, especially to Paris, which is where he and Laurie spent their honeymoon. Ted lived life to the fullest, and rarely complained about his illnesses. He was truly an inspiration to his family and friends with his joie de vivre. Viewing hours will be at the funeral home of Robinson, Wright & Weymer, 34 Main Street, Centerbrook, Connecticut, from 4:00 – 7:00 pm on Tuesday, January 16. The funeral service will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday, January 17, at Saint John's Episcopal Church in Essex, Connecticut. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Critical Care Unit at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, Connecticut. The staff, doctors and nurses there took such wonderful care of him over many years, and we are eternally grateful.
