Obituary of Samuel Byron Perry

Samuel Byron Perry, 53, of Middletown, CT joined the angels in Heaven on January 23, 2018. He was born July 14, 1964 in Groton, CT, the youngest of 6 children of Brewster and Eileen "Sammy" Perry. Sam spent his early years in Ivoryton, CT and in 1972 moved with his family to California where he enjoyed 12 years living in the San Diego area. He excelled at swimming at the Local YMCA and competed in Special Olympics, and served faithfully as an acolyte at Saint Peter's Episcopal Church in Del Mar, CA. His steady companion Jemima, a black lab, was always at his side. In 1984 Sam and his parents returned to the Essex area. While living in the "Long Yellow House" many a day was spent sweeping the sidewalk, greeting passersby, and melting hearts. Sam graduated from Valley Regional High School in 1985, and began working in various local businesses through the assistance of AVP, Inc. He continued to serve as an acolyte in Saint John's Episcopal Church, and compete in Special Olympics, and also became a member of the Essex Fire Department. In 2000, Sam moved into the Brian House in Chester, CT and his new family was born. Despite this move, Sam continued an active relationship with his mother, siblings, and family friends. So often he was the life of the party, and ever the entertainer! "Sam the Man" will be forever remembered for his joyful and occasionally mischievous nature, his full heart, and his favorite sayings: "I like that!", "It's not too bad", "Not anymore!", and "Too late now!" The family is especially grateful to the Brian House for caring for Sam almost 17 years. A big thank you to the Village at South Farms for welcoming Sam this past summer and making him feel at home. A Thank You as well to the Visiting Angels and Care at Home for their support. Sam was predeceased by his parents, and his oldest brother Brewster Perry Jr. He is survived by his siblings, Jonathan Perry, Sarah Perry, Bradford Perry, and Joanna Roemhild, and his niece and nephews, Christian Perry, Nathan Perry, Matthew Perry, Brennan Perry, Devin Perry, Andrew Roemhild and Hannah Roemhild. A celebration of Sam's life will be held on March 3 at 10:30 AM at Saint John's Episcopal Church in Essex. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: National Down Syndrome Society, Alzheimer's Association or Saint John's Episcopal Church.
