Obituary of Carlisle Knowlton

Carlisle Knowlton of Haddam, Connecticut, died at home early Tuesday morning after a fall. Sandy, as he was known to family and friends, was born July 2, 1930, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Charles Osmond Knowlton and Isabel Taylor Knowlton, shortly after the death of an older brother, Toddy (Charles Osmond Knowlton Jr.). His younger sister, Penny (Penelope Knowlton Pierce), predeceased him. Mr. Knowlton graduated from Bronxville High School in 1948 and from Amherst College in 1952. He served proudly as lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1954 and was posted to Reykjavík, Iceland. Residing for many years in Glendale, Ohio, Mr. Knowlton worked for Champion Paper Company, now International Paper. Since 1977, Sandy has been a principal at Beard Lumber in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. Sandy was a sailor and a gardener and a great lover of English literature, with a particular fondness for both the metaphysical poets and P. G. Wodehouse. He was also a snappy dresser and was known for his dry sense of humor and a collection of handsome bow ties. Sandy married Jane Scott on October 25, 1952, after a two-year courtship. They were married more than sixty years and raised four children together: Carlisle Knowlton Rex-Waller (John Rex-Waller), Jane Andrews (Drew) Knowlton Schaeffer (William Schaeffer), Charles Scott Knowlton (Scott), and Christopher Breckenridge Knowlton (Sally DeGozzaldi). He is survived by his devoted wife and children and by seven loving grandchildren: Robert Carlisle Rex-Waller (Charlene), Caroline Taylor Rex-Waller, Emma Scott Schaeffer, William Carlisle Schaeffer, Douglas Philip Hamilton, James Andrews Knowlton, and Philip Scott Knowlton. Services will be held Monday, February 4, at 11 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church in Essex, Connecticut. Interment will be private.
