Obituary of James Michael Costin

James Michael Costin passed away unexpectedly at home on February 10, 2020. James was born March 25, 1957 in San Francisco, CA and moved with his family to Bethany, CT in 1968. He attended Amity High School and proudly played for the Spartan’s Football team #50. After graduation, James enlisted in the U.S Navy and honorably served his country. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor on the USS Sample and remained in the Reserves for many years. As a young man James enjoyed many flights with the beloved Ellie Downs at the Bethany Airport, where he developed his love of flying. He pursued his dream to become a pilot and completed aviation school in Florida, subsequently working for Executive Jets. He flew people like Celine Dion, Tom Jones, Don Shula and Hulk Hogan along with many friends and family. After 9/11 the industry changed and James returned to Connecticut where he remained involved in Aviation for several years. James’ love for God, Country and Family was constant. He was predeceased by his parents John and Joan Costin. He leaves behind two daughters, Brittany Guerra, and Cristina Costin, two grandchildren, Makayla and Caleb Guerra, his siblings, Karen Pressler (Felix) John Costin, Patricia Staffa (Gary), Kevin Costin (Anna), Mary Murray (Tom), several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. In recent years James enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, camping, playing music, attending concerts, air shows, football games and sharing many conversations with Veterans. He was a gentle giant and a kid at heart. Life was not always easy for him, but James always persevered and never gave up. He will be missed tremendously by all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to any Veteran’s organization in his name.
